Where to Shop
Groceries
While there are very few times you would need to buy groceries while living on campus, there are a lot of supermarket that is located nearby. Whole Foods is within walking distance of campus. While it is close to campus the food may be a little pricey, and it offers a limit selection of groceries and food items. For a more extensive selection, you should visit Jewel/Osco on the Greenleaf/Chicago intersection. The distance is too far to walk, but the Intercampus Shuttle that runs M-F has a stop right infront of Jewel/Osco. On Sundays, there is a Shop ‘N Ride shuttle that stops at Target, which also offers a good selection of grocery items.
Clothes
Downtown Evanston has a lot of private boutiques and large label clothing stores (Gap and Northface). However, to get the full experience of a shopping mall, students would have to take the CTA bus 201 to Old Orchard Mall. Old Orchard Mall is an outdoor mall with a lot of stores. In addition, they also have a Cheesecake Factory and a California Pizza Kitchen, if you want to eat dinner after shopping. However, the fare for the bus is $2.25 each way.
Fun Fact: Old Orchard Mall is mentioned in the movie “Mean Girls” as it takes place in Evanston, however the place depicted in the movie is clearly not the real Old Orchard Mall.
Miscellaneous
Sometimes you just need a new lamp, or just a gift for Secret Santa. Thankfully, CVS is located a block away from South Campus. You can also get to Target through the Shop ‘N Ride (see Groceries). In addition, Chicago is only an El ride away. There are 3 El stops located near campus. The closest one to CCI is Noyes, and is about a 7 minute walk from CCI.
